Pay it Forward - Character Representations

Pay it Forward is a movie about society, and what each of us can do to improve it. Each character represents many different life lessons, and here are a few of them. Trevor represents giving, Eugene Simonet represents fear, Arlene represents desperation, Chris Chandler (Reporter) represents curiosity, and the stranger named Mr. Thorsen represents kindness.

Trevor McKinney had a very absorbent mind. He was ready to listen to anyone. Fortunately, the right person came along to guide him. Mr. Simonet gave him an assignment to change the world. Trevor created a unique concept called 'Pay it Forward'. It consists of doing a large favor for 3 different people, and like a pyramid, spreading the word to each of them to do favors for 3 other strangers. Many people can think about doing something like this, but Trevor actually does it. It shows how truly giving he was. Under the toughest of circumstances, Trevor focused on helping others, and that is why he represented giving.

Eugene Simonet, Trevor's Social Studies teacher, had great intentions for the world. He gave his class an assignment that involved changing the world for the better, but perhaps because of fear of doing it himself. In his relationship with Arlene, he showed great fear almost all of the time. This was due to his inability to let go of his past. It took drastic measures for Eugene Simonet to release his fear.

Arlene McKinney represented desperation. Most of her acts were done desperately, hoping for a better future. She worked 2 "informal" jobs, just to support Trevor and herself after her ex husband Ricky left her. When Ricky came back into her life, she took him back, because she was hoping for a return to normalcy. She preferred certainty in a bad relationship over uncertainty in a good relationship. Of course, this would change by the end of the movie.

Chris Chandler was a very inquisitive reporter. He represented curiosity, because he was willing to drive a long distance, just to find out information about a story. A story that will not make him any money. Chris was a very proactive person, only needing his own approval to take a certain action. His curiosity drove him to commit a good deed.

Finally, the stranger named Mr. Thorsen represented kindness. He gave his brand new Jaguar to Chris, just to pay it forward. A bit unrealistic, yes, but a great action to represent kindness. Being kind usually starts a positive chain reaction, and this kind deed by a stranger caused Chris to heighten his sense of curiosity about the 'Pay it Forward' situation.

If you are a fan of truly inspiring movies, then I am sure that "Pay it Forward" has a chance to be on your top movies list. Each character represents so many ideas, making it a very special movie. Although quite sad, "Pay it Forward" is sure to contain great life lessons for everyone.

A Commentary - A Brilliant Mind Documentary

The documentary "My Brilliant Mind" is all about the mysteries of being a genius. Upon learning that I had to watch a documentary, I had mixed emotions. I wasn't really enthusiastic about anything concerning science since I wasn't really a fan of science. I thought, "ah boring nanaman to, pero ok na substitute to sa class". Well, even with these thoughts, I was also intrigued at what I will discover about geniuses, since I don't really know much about them beyond IQ scores and certain historical people.

As I started the first of 3 films, I quickly became engrossed at the thought that at 2 years old, a Marc Yu was able to develop perfect pitch. As the film progressed, and I saw more and more of how this child's mind has developed, I became more and more awed at this child. Any thoughts and feelings of boredom quickly vanished and these were replaced by intrigue, interest and more awe. All of the films had this particular effect on me. The film about Susan Polger, George Widener also increased my interest because I was intrigued by how Susan's brain was able to make playing chess second-nature to her and by how George was able to know all those information about dates.

One thing that really struck me was how both Marc Yu and his mom had the drive and the determination to really improve Marc's abilities. I applaud Marc's mom because she was able to positively exploit her son's abilities. After noticing about Marc's difference, she devoted her time to really improving and helping her son grow as a genius, or a child prodigy. I was also struck by Marc Yu because he was always saying that he wanted to play and learn the pieces that were deemed too hard for his age. He took every "No" as a challenge and an addition to his drive. One thing that I learned about Marc's remarkable story was that for someone to become a genius, one shouldn't rely on one's abilities. Hard work and interest was really important for one to develop.

This was the same with Susan Polger. Her father believed that by making children undergo early education, their true potential can be easier achieved. Her father, even though he wasn't a very distinguished chess player, exposed Susan to the many sources of information and experience and this helped Susan's brain develop in a different way. What struck me the most about this story was how her brain was able to memorize and recognize over 10,000 chunks in chess. I was amazed at the true potential of our brain. Through years of experience, her brain was able to store every game and every chunk into her brain. This allowed her to immediately know what she had to do. Because of this she is able to predict the next moves of her opponent. This gave her an edge because she now has the capability of dictating how her opponent will move. This was all thanks to her father's hard work and ideas.

The thought of "use it or lose it" was also emphasized in the movie and this was shown in the story of the 14 year old girl who was kept isolated from the world. I learned that it is really important to develop and exercise our brain so that it won't lose its important functions.

One thing that really struck me about the films was the idea that from physical and mental deficiencies, a genius could be born. This was the case with George Widener. The thought that even when our brain lacks in certain aspects, it makes up by developing the other parts. Also, I was intrigued by how certain events in our lives can trigger a biochemical reaction in our brain and change how we perceive the world around us.

After watching the films, I learned one very important lesson on how we can improve ourselves as individuals. We have to really work hard and be determined in what we do. Even if we aren't born genius, we should keep in mind that by pushing ourselves to hard work and by just keeping at it, we will be able to reach our potential. Also, we shouldn't waste time and energy and that it is important to subject our brain to positive activities so that we won't lose the chance of developing it. The brain is a very complex part of our body and it is up to us to really take the time to nourish and work on developing it.

Mulan - The Brave Female Warrior

Mulan is the name of a fictional character from the Chinese poem "Hua Mulan" and was adapted into a film by Disney in 1998. The story takes place during the Huns' invasion of China.

The character of Mulan is different from any other Disney characters. She is brave and takes control of her destiny. She believes in honor and pleasing her family. When the army comes along to enlist, her father is told to go, since they have no son, despite the fact that he is old. This forces her to take her father's place in the army and dresses up as a boy, bringing along her pet dragon, Mushu, and her lucky cricket, Cri-kee.

She goes to the army camp under the name "Ping". The captain, Li Shang wants to send him home, but "Ping" proves that he is strong by climbing a pole and getting an arrow, while having weights on and is allowed to stay.

They go out into war, and are found by the Huns, thanks to Mushu's clumsiness. Mulan cleverly shoots into the icy mountain top, and the Huns are buried. During the battle, she saves Shang but gets injured herself and is found out to be a girl. Shang lets her go with the condition that she cannot fight with the troops.

Later in the story, she finds out that the Huns are back and goes off to warn the army. She goes to the Forbidden City and saves the emperor from the Huns by using her wit and the help of her friends. She goes home and is honored as a hero, for saving all of China.

New Moon Movie to Make the Cut?

New Moon Movie, the sequel to Twilight, is going to be big, very big. Raking in over 382 millions dollars gross, there are big expectations for the New Moon Movie. Because the going is hot, Summit has planned to have New Moon out by the 20th of November, 2009, exactly 1 year after Twilight's release. We're in July now and filming has been completed, however post-production is still in the works.

You might say, "yea they've got 4 months to work on it, heaps of time". That's true, but did you know that Eclipse is set to begin filming on August 17 and then be released July next year! In other words, they are going to be working on two films at once, back-to-back and have Eclipse ready within 8 months! This is a very tight schedule, considering we haven't seen the second film yet. New Moon Movie no doubt will be something to watch, but can they make the cut? That is something that everybody would like to know.

Besides the production side of things, the actors themselves are going to be burnt out amongst the Twilight Saga and their other contracted films. There is also talk of doing Breaking Dawn, yet another addition to the Twilight Saga.

Adding to the mix is the fan base of girls after Robert Pattinson. They've caused disruptions in between on-set of his new movie "Remember Me" and his personal life. Poor guy was even hit by a taxi! Hopefully, he wont have those issues when filming Eclipse.

Best thing to do is sit tight, keep up to date with how the production is going and just see what happens. Good luck to the New Moon Movie crew!
