The father-son dynamic is very central to the Psych TV show. Henry Spencer and Shawn Spencer carry the dramatic weight of this whole show. This is the cleaver function of the flashbacks of Shawn's childhood at the beginning of most episodes.

The show is about these two friends, Gus and Shawn. Well, the show is actually mostly about Shawn. Shawn since childhood has had incredible mental abilities to analyze details in order to solve problems. Since he was a child, his father has already been training his mental observation skills thinking that the boy will also grow up to be a great officer of the law just like his old man. Fast forward to the present, Shawn is watching news coverage of a crime. He notices details, puts two and two together like the genius that he is and solves the crime. He calls the police to tip them; the police follow the tip, but then think that Shawn must be in on the crime because they figure that only an insider would have access to such knowledge. As they were about the arrest Shawn, Shawn pretends to be a psychic fooling the police and the crowd present by displaying his mental powers and guessing correctly about personal information just by observing details from those present. Ever since then, he's been forced to ride along the ruse in order to avoid suspicion. He has become a consultant to the Santa Barbara Police Department because of his "talent."

Now, the father son archetypical relationship that is milked by the Psych TV series really yields a lot of juice. Henry Spencer had such high hopes for his son. But Shawn is just a wacky free spirited kind of dude. Which is not really so bad, in fact, his shenanigans are what gives the show such life. It's mostly a fun con romp and silliness.

There is this one episode though, when Shawn, after a long series of convoluted cons was running down the football field in full football gear, with the song We Are the Champions by Queen, blaring in full cheesiness. Then, there is a reaction shot of Henry Spencer and he is doing something very unlike him. He was smiling. He was smiling as his sun was basking in cheesy glory.

That scene was really something else. It was not because of the funny situation or the Queen song. It was the smile on Henry Spencer's face. He was proud of his son. I wish there were a lot more moments like this in Psych TV show episodes. Despite all of Henry's disapproval of Shawn's wild and unorthodox (to say the least) methods and career, he was still happy of the great work his son is doing with his life.

Is the effect of Beverly Hills 90210 TV show good or bad?

Almost all little girls grow up and dream of becoming a princess in a castle and find their prince on a white horse. The usually grow up thinking that the prince will take care of everything. It doesn't enter their young minds that they would also have to take care of themselves. And when they grow up, they will look for their prince, this boyfriend who will cater to their needs. Their criteria for men are limited to this. They care less about the kind of job or passions the man has, and more about whether or not the man can support her. It is very self-centered to think that way of course, but a lot of these girls blame the media for this mentality and not take accountability.

A lot of girls I know have grown up with watching Beverly Hills 90210. I talked to them about their poor choice of men and their failing relationships. They all seem to realize later in life that the images of women the 90210 TV show portrayed were what contributed to their present taste in men. This seems logical enough. A lot of people blame the media for their education. Killers, murderers, and rapists can all be quite easily gain access to violence and pornography through the medium of film. But this argument cannot be definitive. Once can't keep on blaming the media. For isn't the media simply a reflection of the advancements in our society and our collective morals and beliefs that are changed by events and advancements? However, though it is a reflection, it is still undeniably a force of change in itself. So which one came first, the chicken or the egg?

Every night when the 90210 TV show was aired, young impressionable little girls would tune in to find out if pretty boy Dylan was dating either Kelly or Brenda. The girls loved the bad ass image Dylan exuded. My friends told me that they found his ability to take care of his girl to be such a turn on. He had a lot of money and that was what he used to "take care" of them.

Now, there is a new cast of characters for the show. I have been watching the show and I see that not much has changed. They have just amplified the sex though. The characters are also so thin. Shenea looks like she has some form of eating disorder. It could be either bulimia or anorexia. Ok, so all of that are just rumors. What is undeniable though is the fact that they are so skinny. And this is the new thing that they are promoting to young girls everywhere.

The television show that best describes my reason behind my mate selection is Beverly Hills, 90210. Every Wednesday night at 8pm, I would tune in to find out who Dylan McKay was dating that week, would it be Brenda or Kelly? I just loved the bad boy image. There was just something about him that was just so attractive, and the best thing about him was that he could support any girl he was with. He had the funds to take care of his girlfriend. So, that Dylan McKay image is what I based my mate search on, having a sexy appearance and stable enough to take care of me. Like I said earlier, I'm not a gold-digger, I just want to be taken care of, and if you have an issue with that...blame it on the media.

Mass media sets the standard in acceptable ways for me to portray my love type. Many people think that I am a director, because I have good leadership skills, but in actuality my leadership is limited due to social acceptance (i.e. harsh demands, screaming and yelling is socially unacceptable). Having a director love type with the mass media all around me, I have found out that society makes me look bad. Strong, straightforward, decision-makers, who are directors, are always portrayed as the rude, bossy, bitch that nobody likes, either male or female. Society gives off the vibe that you have to be a bitch to make good decisions, but that is not the case for me. I know what I want and I go after it, but that doesn't make me a bitch, just ambitious.
