Do UK Soaps Subconsciously Promote a Booze Culture?

There have been many successful TV soaps in the UK including Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and a vast array of others but are UK soaps subconsciously promoting a booze culture amongst the young of the UK?

Eastenders

The vast majority of scenes in Eastenders are centred round the Queen Vic public house which has seen weddings, deaths, scandal and intrigue. It seems as though everybody in Eastenders has at some point entered the pub no matter what age they are.

Coronation Street

The Rovers Return has been central to Coronation Street for over 50 years and, much like the Queen Vic, it has seen its fair share of scandals and intrigue. While youngsters are not often seen in the Rovers Return there is no doubt that it is a very important element of the show.

Emmerdale

Emmerdale is probably the main promoter of the booze culture in the UK, even though it is perhaps the most laid-back and less controversial of the UK soaps. They Woolpack has seen more than its fair share of deaths, fights, intrigue and interesting storylines and as with many other soaps it would appear that everybody has been through those doors at some stage.

These are just three of the main UK soaps which are centred round drinking and public houses and which many people now blame for promotion of the booze culture in the UK. It is easy to forget that while it is illegal to drink in a public house if you are under 18, there are large elements of very young children and young adults who watch UK soaps.

To these young adults and young children, drinking and public houses are accepted as part of everyday life from a very early stage which can have implications in the future. Whether it is correct to centre UK soaps round a public house is very debatable and an argument which has been ongoing for many years.

Which Character in Eastenders Would You Be?

Award-winning BBC soap Eastenders has a vast array of characters which many people relate to, despise, love and hate. But if you could choose just one character out of the show to reflect your own personality who would it be?

Dot Cotton

Dot Cotton has been in the show from many years although the vast majority of her storylines have been depressing, slightly alarming and in some cases life-threatening. Her son Nick has returned on numerous occasions to try and "finish her off" and while she has learnt her lesson over the last few months she appears to be the type of person who can see no wrong in anybody.

Max Branning

Max Branning is a very strange and complex character who is difficult to read, difficult to understand and very difficult to relate to. He is the type of person who seems to want more and is often willing to sacrifice happiness and stability in the pursuit of dangerous thrills and spills. However, despite his confident manner he always seems to get caught!

Ronnie and Roxie Mitchell

Ronnie and Roxie Mitchell are two of the most well liked characters in Eastenders as many younger children seem to be able to relate to their look, their style and their way of life. While many older viewers of Eastenders will not necessarily agree with their lifestyle, their social life and their activities they do in many ways reflect society of today.

Bradley Branning

Bradley is your stereotypical downtrodden male who always manages to mess up, be used and often comes across as one of life's "losers". However, there are various characteristics within Bradley Branning which many young people can relate to as they grow up in the world of today. He has a heart of gold but sometimes his heart rule his head and he often ends up with the "rough end of the stick".

Ian Beale

If there is one character in Eastenders who attracts widespread criticism and in many cases widespread hatred it is Ian Beale. He is your stereotypical "mouthpiece" who has a view about everything and given the opportunity would make life difficult for anybody. He is a taker as opposed to a giver, and like many of this type of person, he is very often found out. Brave on the surface but a cowered in reality, that is Ian Beale!

Is Eastenders As Depressing As Some People May Have You Believe?

While there is no doubt that the award-winning BBC soap Eastenders is becoming a worldwide phenomenon, why is it so depressing?

The vast majority of successful TV shows have been upbeat, funny and full of life but all we ever hear about with Eastenders is depressing storylines, deaths and bad news. However, when you consider the life of Eastenders we have seen some funny storylines, weddings, good news and some very entertaining plots but it would appear that we only remember the depressing and sad episodes.

For a soap such as Eastenders to have lasted so long is a testament to the ability and skill of the various scriptwriters who have been employed by the show. While the recent storyline regarding Danielle Mitchell and Ronnie Mitchell has seen the show receive significant bad press, in the world of soaps there is no such thing as bad press. Despite the fact that thousands of people have complained and claim they will never watch Eastenders again, viewing figures remain fairly unmoved and the threat of a boycott appears to be waning.

The truth is that while Eastenders probably has more than its fair share of depressing and sad storylines it is fun, there are good characters and the acting is perhaps second to none in the world of soaps (although viewers of Coronation Street may disagree). We only seem to remember the depressing storylines for some strange reason but then again maybe the whole reason for watching a soap is to see others "suffering", which makes our lives seem that little bit better?

When you also consider that Eastenders, despite the thick cockney accents, has been sold to many TV channels and satellite stations around the world, the writers must be doing something right. The show is more popular overseas than ever before and while UK viewing figures may not currently be reaching the highs of years gone by, they are still a very acceptable in what is a cut-throat business.
