American Gangster Review

The movie American Gangster was a classic in itself. It was up there with Goodfellas and Casino. I really enjoyed this movie a lot!

Denzel Washington plays Frank Lucus, who was a gangster in Harlem in the 1960's and 1970's. He grew up learning from another famous gangster in Harlem, Bumpy Johnson. Frank took things to a new height back in his day. The way he made money was to use US military planes that were coming back and forth from Vietnam to transport heroin into the US.

The heroin in Vietnam was 100% pure and he got it at such a cheap cost that he made millions. He had so many people working for him in the city, it was unreal. He had judges, police officers, and all of his people than ran the business. Its hard to say how many exactly, but I would guess easily 500 people combined. He eventually got caught, but not before he made a lot of money and killed a lot of people.

This movie is comparable to the classic mobster movies like Casino and Goodfellas. The Godfather is still my personal favorite of all time, but American Gangster was great. In the end when he got caught, Frank decided that he would help the cop that arrested him, put everyone in jail that was a crooked cop. This led to the arrest of over 60% of the drug law enforcement division in New York City alone. In return for his cooperation, he got a reduced sentence in prison.

I give this movie a 9 out of 10. It was just about as good as you can get. It was a bit long, but these kind of movies I don't mind being long. It just makes them all the better.
