"Inglourious Basterds" Tops $100 Million Overseas
Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" passed the $100 million mark overseas after only a month of the opening. On the foreign front, Tarantino's WWII thriller is still a hit with audiences and shows no sign of slowing.
This week, "Inglourious Basterds" is a sturdy foreign performer becoming the 16th picture this year to pass the $100 million mark in the international box office. Bowing in 36 markets, the Nazi-hunting thriller still has 26 territories in which to open, including Israel, Lebanon, Singapore and Spain this weekend.
Tarantino has been promoting the film all over the world and received a wonderful response after announcing "Basterds" at the Israeli premiere in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, September 15, 2009.
Producer Lawrence Bender and Austrian actor Christopher Waltz, who portrays the film's key villain, attended "Israelis Go Wild for Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds" event.
Interestingly, France, the country that the film takes place in has been the number one foreign territory to date with a total of $18.9 million in box office earnings. This is followed by Germany with $17.3 million, the United Kingdom with $15.7 million, Australia with $9 million and Russia with $5.9 million.
The foreign marketing campaign from Universal Pictures International began in May 2009 with the world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and a focus on the international cast and storyline. The cast includes Waltz, French actress Melanie Laurent and German actor Michael Fassbender and Diane Kruger.
It appears that "Inglourious Basterds" will soon become the highest Tarantino film on the domestic and international fronts. "Pulp Fiction" totaled $107.9 million domestically and $106 million internationally; "Kill Bill Vol. 1" totaled $70.1 million domestically and $110.9 million internationally; while "Kill Bill Vol. 2" grossed $66 million domestically and $86 million internationally.
