New Technology Will Make Online DVD Rental a Reality

New technology, as well as increasing demand from consumers, will help to make online film rental services a reality.

Users of services to help customers compare online DVD rental services can now see how DVD rental companies are responding to new products.

For example, users of the UK's biggest movie rental service, LoveFilm, will soon be able to change their rental queue and watch movies through their television sets.

Hardware distributor, Samsung has said that it will support a new streaming service in their new televisions which will allow LoveFilm users to access the entire catalogue of 60,000 movies using just a remote.

The service will be available on Samsung's new platform, Internet at TV, which will support downloaded apps and widgets. The LoveFilm app will be available for download, along with BBC's iPlayer.

Sony has allegedly also cut a deal with LoveFilm to release a streaming service on its new Bravia televisions. The word on the grapevine says the LoveFilm service will be built into the XrossMediaBar (a very swish tool designed by Sony to navigate around their TVs and consoles), which suggests that we could soon see streaming through the PS3.

The ideas are likely to win favour from anyone who has ever suffered poor service from Royal Mail will also rejoice at the news. Consumers who compare online rental find that most companies use the national postal service.

DVDs are notoriously liable to be lost, damaged or stolen in the post and although, so far, the problems haven't deterred online DVD renters the option of an easier service is likely to tempt them.

In addition, the idea of instant access to a large catalogue of over 60,000 movies is likely to appeal to consumers used to a large amount of choice online. If only as a means to have spontaneous Star Wars marathons on a rainy weekend.

Online services will also mean greater value for money as with waiting times between movies are completely abolished.

With these advantages to online DVD streaming services, a rise in the number of services available is predicted. It is expected that the rise in new online DVD rental technologies will eventually make film rental through the post a thing of the past.

On the other side of the Atlantic, meanwhile, online DVD rental through gaming devices has become increasingly common.

PS3, Xbox 360 and even Wii gamers can already stream movies through their consoles using a streaming service by US DVD rental giant, Netflix, but we're yet to see it over here.

Experts are suggesting that we could also see an online DVD streaming service through set-top boxes (for example, Sky plus and Freeview boxes) and even Blu-ray players.

One thing is for sure, as competition in the online DVD rental market grows more fierce ways to watch films online will creep higher up the list for those consumers who compare online DVD rental deals.
