Is a Projector the Best Choice?
Is a projector the best choice? For size and cost per image there is no question, however there are some conditions such as lighting, room layout and seating, that can seriously reduce the effect and quality of the image.
Lighting - The most important of all these factors is the amount of ambient which is allowed into a room. The more light in the room, the brighter the projected images need to be. Ideally a basement would be the perfect room as you can control the amount of light you allow in. Larger rooms with large windows will be harder to control. You can use any room as long as you can reduce the amount of light allowed in so the room is dimly light will. It would be near impossible to produce descent images in a room allowing in too much daylight. The higher the amount of lumens, a projector can produce, the brighter the room can be.
Room Layout- The room you're using will need to be of ample size and have at least one large wall to project the image toward. The wall needs to be larger than the image. The room also needs to be deep enough to allow for seating. Another important factor is whether to have a ceiling mounted or tabletop projector. This depends of whether you you will be transporting it at all. If using a tabletop projector bear in mind that there musn't be anything blocking the path between projector and screen.
Seating- This tends to depend on personal taste, if you prefer sitting in the back when you go to the cinema then perhaps you would prefer the seating to be a little way back, however if you prefer sitting near the front then maybe you would prefer the seating closer., A general rule of thumb is around 1.5 x the width of the screen.
If you feel you have adequate space and sufficient control for the conditions, then going for a digital projector would be the best choice.
