Is Netflix Right For You?

Tired of commuting to and from your local video store just for a few lousy movies? If so, I recommend checking out Netflix. By using this service, you'll save time, money, and more easily discover new exciting movies.

A pioneer in their field, Netflix is an online DVD/Blu-ray rental service. There are competitors who have entered this field over the past few years, but Netflix remains the dominant player.

The user logs into their Netflix account and picks a few movies they'd like to see. These movies are placed in a virtual queue. Depending on the type of plan you're on, Netflix will then send out a predetermined number movies from that queue.

Because Netflix has a huge collection of distribution centers across the US, movies typically only take one business day to arrive. When you're done watching a movie, simply send it back in the prepaid envelope. Netflix will then send you the next movie in your queue. The monthly cost of Netflix varies from $5 to about $20.

I've been a customer of Netflix for more than a year and have been quite please with their service. It's been reliable for the most part and during that one incident when service slowed down, they gave me a partial refund.

Are there any bad things about Netflix? Sometimes when a hot new movie comes out, there will be such high demand that it might take a bit longer than usual to get your copy. Also, due to the nature of this business, there's that natural gap in time while your movies are still in transit.

Want that to see that special movie with your wife this Saturday? If Netflix says it's arriving on Monday, that's when you'll get it. Better drive down to Blockbuster. But if you go into Netflix knowing of these delays, it shouldn't be all that big of a deal.

Netflix has another option in addition to DVDs by mail. It's called Netflix streaming. Currently, if you have a Windows PC, you can watch movies streamed directly from the Netflix servers.

On most plans, there's no additional fee. And if that wasn't enough, it's all you can eat. Watch as many movies as you want without paying any kind of extra fee.

In testing this service. I found the quality of the video to be quite good. Not as good as DVD quality, but considering that it's streaming, I find it to be perfectly watchable.

The available pool of streaming movies is much smaller than the regular DVD library, but the list is constantly growing and I see more and more mainstream titles every week. If you want to watch these streaming titles on your TV, you can use a device called the Roku Netflix Player to stream these movies directly to your TV via either ethernet or Wi-Fi. The Roku only costs $100.

Netflix has my full recommendation. The quality of service and the selection of titles is amazing. Combine that with their constantly growing streaming library and you have place where movie lovers of all types can kick back and watch what they want when they want.
